Valencia Art Nouveau buildings
The Gaudi inspired fantasy Mercado Colon or Columbus Market building in the heart of the city was completed in 1916. It is surrounded by majestic art nouveau residential buildings. It is an attractive area of the city. As you walk around stop and look up.
This yellow and white building looks like a giant wedding cake with ornate white icing piped on every available straight line and around the curves. This Art nouveau stile of building construction and design was totally different to what preceded it. It is more frivolous and decorative. The previous neo -classical style buildings took their inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman buildings; all columns, straight edges and triangular capping with plane long rectangular windows
