Mercado Colon or Columbus Market Exterior
The early 1900's were a prosperous time for the Spanish port of Valencia. This is visible by the large amount of expensive lavish housing and public buildings constructed during this period. They have their own Art Nouveau style.
They were highly decorative which contrasted with the plan whitewashed buildings of the surrounding countryside. Exports of Spanish agricultural goods were on the up. Merchants made money from selling new imported goods from around the world. Income from Wine and olive production was good.
A lot of the transactions occurred in the old Mercado Colon or Columbus Market area of the city. the now wealthy merchants decided they wanted a better building in which to conduct their business deals they befitted their newly found rise in status. The new Mercado Colon or Columbus Market building was erected to match the architectural style of the elegant buildings that now surrounded the square.
The new Gaudi style curves were included in the design for the very colourful awnings. Mosaic tiles were used on the front of the market hall to show farmer's produce and workers in the vineyards. This was no industrial revolution iron shed. This building was a piece of art in which it was a pleasure to work, trade and socialise.
