Skibotn Harbour - Tromso Fjord day trip

Carry on north heading towards Alta, up the E6, having left the junction with the E8 behind you. On your left over on the other side of the saltwater fjord is the mountainous ridge of the Lyngen Alps National Park.

Lyngen Alps

That coast was the German last defensive line against the advancing Russian and Norwegian troops in 1944 - 45 during World War Two.

The Germans on their retreat from Finmark in northern Norway burnt down all the towns, villages house and farms. The idea was to provide any food or shelter to the advancing allied armies. That means that nearly all the buildings you see from now on are post WW2 modern

The village of Skibotn is on the east coast of the fjord and has its own harbour. There is a small fishing fleet that uses it as a base. This is a very pleasant place to stop and have a little walk. There are great views of the Lyngen Alps. In the winter the fishermen fillet the fish they catch and dry them in the winter sun nailed to wooden racks. You can see some of the racks near the harbour.
