Wildlife of Lake Nakuru National Park Kenya
I loved Lake Nakuru National Park. The accommodation and food at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge inside the park was first class. I highly recommend you stay there. A cheaper option is to stay outside the park in Nakuru at the Midland Hotel. It is clean and well run but not as much fun.
The park does not have herds of Elephants but is famous for the huge population of pink flamingos, family groups of white legged Rothschild Giraffes and endangered Black Rhinos as well as family groups of White Rhinos. There are a number of petrol stations in Nakuru where you can fill up your car before entering the park.
There are a great variety of other animals in the park. Look out for early morning Hyenas lazing around the lake looking for an easy mouthful of flamingo. Breeding groups of ostriches also come scratching around the beach area. I saw my first Leopard in Lake Nakuru National Park walking through the green undergrowth of the wooded area to the south of the Lake. I knew Leopards climbed trees but I had never heard of lions climbing trees until I saw a young lioness leap up a tree and act as lookout for the prides' next meal.
Look out for herds of giraffe with their young. Lake Nakuru National Park is one of Africa's success stories. The nearly extinct Rothschild Giraffes have been reintroduced to the park and they have increased in numbers so they are no longer a rare sight. You can tell they are Rothschild Giraffes because they have white legs below the knee.
