Larne
The word Larne comes from the Irish word ’Latharna’ which means the domain of a Viking chieftain. It is a large seaport and industrial town. Some of the town is ugly. The heavy industry sites look out of place
amongst the rolling green hills and watery inlet. The people of Larne were
severely affected by the 1845 –1850 Irish Potato Famine. It was from here, during the 18th century, that many Irish families emigrated to America. The first emigrant ship Friends Goodwill sailed from Larne in May 1717, heading for Boston in the United States.
As you leave the town of Larne the real beauty of the Antrim Costal A2 Road
begins. Make sure you stop the car frequently to admire the scenery
Parts of the coast line are very rocky. The sea has worn away the strata and
natural cracks in the rock to produce some interesting shapes. You can go
paddling in the rock pools looking for crabs and shrimp
