Ghent Port at night
Walk around the old Ghent Harbour area at night. It is Charming. The oldest house at the Graslei is the 'Spijker'. It is the grey stone building with the arched openings and stepped gabled roof. It was built around the beginning of the 13th century.
All ships that transported grain and wheat via Ghent had to be stored in the 'Spijker' for two to three weeks. This was to guard against famine. Have a look at the two tiny houses built in the gaps between the much bigger guild houses.
The Grain Counters House is on the left side of the Spijker and next to the house known as the 'Angel' with its beautiful renaissance frontage. Originally the Guild houses were made of wood and brick but eventually they were built in stone to reflect the wealth and power of the medieval guilds. Nowadays people enjoy Graslei and Korenlei for a great wine and dine experience. During the day find a table outside and order coffee and waffles and watch the world pass. People watching in such a superb location is a great way to spend your time.
One of the most beautiful warehouse is the guild house of the 'Free Sailors'. The original building was built in 1355. In 1530 it was purchased by the guild of sailors. The front façade was modeled on the late-gothic architectural style. The guild house has an ornate carved ship above the doorway. Only members of the guild of sailors were allowed transport goods by ship through the harbour of Ghent. Because of this privilege they were one of the most powerful guilds.
