Saint-Genies in the Dordogne

Saint-Genies is a typical village of the Black Perigord region in that it's charm lies in its ocher stone houses with traditional tiled roofs. It is located midway between Sarlat and Montignac Lascaux.

village of Saint-Geniès

St-Genies is one of the most beautiful villages in this region. It has a thirteenth century castle and a rare beautiful country church typical of the twelfth century that stands alone on a hill.

A weekly market is held on the town square (Place de la Liberation Square and the Old Town Hall) throughout the year every Sunday morning from 9 am to 1pm. The market stalls primarily sell regional Black Perigord products like foie gras, preserved fruit, chesse, mushrooms, fruit and vegetables. In summer during the months of July and August, every Wednesday evening from 7pm to 11pm, a popular night market is held.

There is a large gravel car park at the bottom of the hill. It has a river running along its edge that leads onto a park with picnic benches. The river skirts both sides of the park and there is a good playground for the children. As you head towards the road have a look at the strange roofed building that straddles the river. It is a 300 year old washing machine. The women of the village would bring their washing down to this building and sit around the edge and chat with each other whilst washing their laundry.

Saint-Genies castle and church

Spend time exploring Saint-Genies and walking the charming back streets and alleyways. There is always something to see around the next corner. Except on Sunday during services the main village church is normally open. It is built next to the chateau.

Even if you are not hungry have a look inside the Chateau's large flagstoned courtyard now used by the castle restaurant. The photograph at the top of this page show the attractive cottages opposite the restaurant. At the top of the hill you will find a street that leads to the historic medieval chapel that proudly stands tall and erect on its on ridge of grassland overlooking the village. Saint-Genies is a very pleasant village in which to while away a few hours and find a place to drink a beer or have a coffee.
