Avignon Place de l'Horloge
The idyllic Avignon city square called Place de l'Horloge - the Clock-tower Square, is southeast of the Papal Palace. It is full by street cafes beneath shady plane trees.
On its west side stands Le Theater Opera House and the neo-classical Belle Epoque 1845 Hotel de Ville town hall that incorporated a 14th Gothic Century clock-tower with life-sized figures on the top, known as 'jacquemarts', that strike the hours. As well as cafes there are shops, restaurants, street vendors and a carousel for the children. It is always busy with locals and tourists eating, shopping, quenching their thirst whilst people watching.
Avignon markets
This is one of the highlights of any holiday in France, walking around a market that sells local products. Try some of the French cheeses. Some of the cheeses that smell the strongest also taste the best. If you have not tried wild boar sausage or pate find the meat stall. It is exquisite with a French bread baguette or smaller baton with a glass of locally produced Rhone red wine. Spend time in one of the near by cafes and watch the would go by. It is a wonderful way to spend time on holiday. Most of the markets in Avignon are held only in the morning 7am to 1pm.
