Tromso Domkirke - The Wooden Cathedral

The Protestant Tromso Dom or Cathedral of Tromso must be one of the most charming yet tiny cathedrals I have ever been to. Built in the 1861 it is one of Norway's largest wooden buildings. Tromso Cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Nord-Halogaland.

It is in the centre of the city near the seafront situated in the middle of a small green in the old town. Some trees have been planted around the cathedral and soften the look of the area. The surrounding wooden period building and shops are attractive. They escaped destruction in the second World War.

Apparently it is an example of wooden Gothic something called 'carpenter gothic' and was the creation of architects D. J. Evjen and Heinrich Grosch. There is seating for 750 people. The altarpiece, painted by Christian Brun, is a copy of one within Bragernes church in Drammen.

In 1863 Claus Jensen, constructed the organ. It was one of his largest works. In 1994, the church was restored and returned to its original colors.

In 1944 the retreating German army enforced the evacuation of Norwegians from the areas of Finnmark and Northern Troms. Some of the evacuees were looked after in the Cathedral.
