San Diego It has many contrasting areas. We stayed in Mission Beach area. This is the seaside holiday area. It is near to Seaworld. If you have not been to the one in Florida go to this one. Just up from Mission Beach is the exclusive Millionaire housing and trendy shopping area of La Jolla (pronounce la Hoya). The beach area is very attractive and made up of sandy coves along a rocky shore. If you are lucky you will see seals and pups on the beach. Look out for ground squirrels and chipmonks. You must go to San Diego Old Town on the hill above the modern port in Mission Hills. After Wyatt Earp left Tombstone he became the Sheriff of San Diego Old Town. They have rebuilt the town. It has a very Mexican feel too it. The staff dress up in period clothing and there are some very good Mexican restaurants. San Diego Zoo is the best zoo in the world. It is built in a forest and very lush and green. The animal enclosures try to match their natural environment. You will see animals not seen in Europe like Koala bears, a herd of 100 year old giant tortoises and a family group of Panda bears. It has a US Marine and Naval base so you will see lots of fast jets and helicopters flying over you. The port has an interesting maritime museum and a collection of old boats. There is an old Aircraft carrier that is used as a floating aviation museum. Its upper deck is full of jet aircraft from different wars. The area near the waterfront called the gas lamp area is the place to go in the evening. It is full of upmarket jazz bars and restaurants. Nearby is the main shopping Mall. What is strange about this shopping centre is that it does not have a roof. |
