Oxford Warnings
Oxford is not different to any other tourist City in that you have to watch out for pickpockets. In crowds keep your rucksack in front of you. Keep your bags with you in cafes or restaurants. Do not put them over the back of chairs or on the floor. Do not give beggars money as most only use it to buy drugs or alcohol.
Problem Pronunciations
Oxford has some place and location names which cause problems for visitors. Magdalene Road, Magdalene Street, Magdalene College and Magdalene bridge is pronounced Maudlin. Balliol College is pronounced Bay-lee-ill. Bodleian library is pronounced Bod-lee-inn for Worcester College is pronounced Wooster. The River Cherwell is pronounced 'Charwell' and the famous mispronunciation the River Thames is pronounced Thems.
The Oxford Canal
Before the days of motorways and trains all the heavy commercial loads were transported into and out of Oxford in canal boats on the Oxford Canal. To escape the noise and traffic of Oxford, try walking the canal path. You can get to it form town at the Hythe Street Bridge, or from Jericho near St. Barnabas Church.
