Oxford Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology
The Ashmolean is a museum of the University of Oxford and is one of the oldest public museums in the world being established in 1683.
It houses rare and priceless examples of art and antiquities including archaeology exhibits, Greek sculptures, mummies, Japanese and Chinese art, bronzes, ceramics, pottery and ancient coins.
The Museum Shop is one of the best souvenir shops in Oxford and it has a good cafe. Look out for the Viking silver display and the Anglo-Saxon treasures that includes the stunning 'Alfred Jewel' belonging to King Alfred the Great (871-899 AD).
The Museum can be found in Beaumont Street, Oxford. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm, Sunday 12pm to 5pm. Free entry.
Another museum worth visiting is the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments, Facility of Music - St Aldates Open Monday – Friday 2pm – 5pm, Saturday 10am – 12noon during term time only. Free entry. You can find the Oxford Tourist Information centre at 15-16 Broad Street, Oxford. www.visitoxford.org
