The Oxford Bridge of Sighs

This is the most photographed piece of architecture in Oxford. This bridge connects the new and old buildings of Hertford College so the students don't get wet and it saves time.

Oxford Bridge of Sighs

It is a 1914 copy of the famous bridge in Venice called the Bridge of Sighs (Ponte di Sospiri) that linked the Doge's palace to the prison. The prisoners were said to 'sigh' as they entered the prison. The footbridge is almost hidden away down a very quiet side street off Radcliffe Square. Its proper name is Hertford Bridge.

It crosses New College Lane. Unfortunately you can't actually use it unless you're a student of Oxford University Hertford College. St. John's College, Cambridge also has its own Bridge of Sighs.
